Barca and Bayern breeze into UEFA semifinals
After their surprising goalless draw in Milan last week, two penalties from Lionel Messi and a goal from Andrés Iniesta gave Barcelona a 3-1 home win and a passage to the semifinals of this year’s UEFA Champions League.
The Argentine converted from the spot just 11 minutes into the quarterfinal second-leg clash in Catalunya, after he himself had been brought down in the penalty area by AC Milan defender Luca Antonini, and then struck again to take his tally for the current campaign to 14.
Messi had shared the previous record with former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, after netting 12 times in the tournament in 2010-11 when Barca won the trophy.
Meanwhile in Munich, Bayern added two goals to last week’s two away goals for a 4-0 aggregate win over Marseille to book their place in the semifinals.
