Pattinson gives Oz 1-0 lead

Australia duly made short work of the New Zealand top order to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series. James Pattinson took the first five wickets to fall as the Kiwis capitulated in traditional fashion, losing some of their wickets in the softest manner, given that this was a Test match.

Man of the Match Pattinson gave the Black Caps no chance, reducing them to 28/5 on his own, before his team-mates got in on the act, including the unlikely Mike Hussey, who dismissed the traditionally barnacle-like Daniel Vettori.

Australia then knocked off the winning runs for the loss of Philip Hughes’ wicket and the message could not be clearer: Australia are back in business and have terrific depth in bowling to go along with their batting.

This was viewed as New Zealand’s best chance in decades to see off Australia: instead, a nine-wicket defeat inside four days was the outcome. — Staff reporter, SportsCentral
