Lions want to dock James more than R100k

The New Age reports that Lions flyhalf Butch James will join coach John Mitchell in the firing line as the Golden Lions Rugby Union looks to finalise its decision to dock three weeks from the former Springbok’s salary for not fulfilling contractual obligations.

James received a four-week suspension after he had recklessly charged into a ruck in the 63rd minute of his team’s 34-20 loss to the Brumbies in Johannesburg in April.

He subsequently missed out on the team’s tour of Australasia and upon his return the Lions won only their second match of the Super Rugby season – defeating the Sharks 38-28.

Lions acting CEO Ruben Moggee has confirmed that talks will continue with James who will then be given time to respond to the proposed action that will be taken against him.

“At this stage, the process is being dealt with in accordance to his contract and finality should be reached during the course of this week,” said Moggee.

James is one of the highest earners in the Lions team and stands to lose more than R100 000 following his discretion.
