George to do IPL-type Sevens

Keo.co.za says that media indicate George will host an IPL-style Sevens tournament in December.

Rapport reports that the tournament, to be hosted a week after the Port Elizabeth leg of the official Sevens series, has already been sanctioned by the South African Rugby Union.

The South Western Districts have confirmed that well known sports promoter Willem Strauss has bankrolled the project which will see players earn up to R100 000 for the tournament.

The newspaper indicated that players would be approached prior to the Port Elizabeth tournament then join their respective franchises George following its conclusion. It is proposed that franchises will be owned by businessmen or organisations.

SWD president Hennie Baartman said: “We lost the IRB tournament but not out capacity and hunger [for Sevens]. We have personnel with 10 years experience in hosting Sevens tournaments. Willem’s skill in this regard is well known and we were pleased to get him on board.” — Rugby Reporter, SportsCentral
