Boland crowned First Division champs

The Regent Boland Cavaliers are the Absa Currie Cup First Division champions after beating the more fancied EP Kings in the final in Wellington, 43-12.

A convincing second half by Boland gave them the win. They ran in five tries after one try in the first half. Flyhalf Elgar Watts missed just one kick out of six to play his part.

Initially, the visitors looked to be favourites, scoring a converted try in the ninth minute through wing Andile Witbooi. But that proved to be their only score of the half with ill discipline and poor defence undoing their title chase.

Boland led 13-7 at halftime  as Watts added two penalties before hooker Clemen Lewis scored from a maul. EP finished the half with 14 men as centre Jaco Bekker was sinbinned.

EP had a a second yellow card when replacement hooker Bobby Dyer was sent off for a dangerous tackle. Boland were now rampant, and scored through wing Brendon April, lock Rynard Landman and No 8 Zandre Jordaan while wing Danwel Demas scored twice in as many minutes towards the end.

The Kings scored a consolation try through Dyer in the last move of the game. — Staff Reporter, SportsCentral
